A FEMALE cosplayer who won thousands of fans by dressing as video game characters has tragically drowned.

Liu Yuling, 25 – better known as "Jovie" – was visiting a "wealthy individual" on the island of Saipan in the Western Pacific when she died in his swimming pool, according to Chinese media.

The photographer and model, of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, eastern China, was discovered lifeless in the water and could not be saved, it was reported.

Local news gave no further details about her host.

News of Jovie’s death came as a shock to her hundreds of thousands of followers, as well as those who have worked with her in China, where she runs a photo studio.

Besides her following on Chinese social media website Sina Weibo – the Chinese equivalent of Twitter – Jovie also had an Instagram fanbase.

Her fans on both social media sites have been leaving condolence messages over the past 24 hours.

Jovie, who was perhaps China’s most enthusiastic cosplayer, dressed up as Japanese video game characters from "Street Fighter".

Chinese media reports said Jovie’s parents had been contacted by the local embassy.

Relatives are said to be on their way to the island, which is the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands – a US commonwealth.
